Project Overview
For one billion people, safe water is scarce. There exists either the issue of quality and the issue of quantity. As a result of this global issue, this engineering design project will simulate a situation in which a plane has failed and crash landed in a deserted island. The survivors must seek fresh, drinkable water. Therefore, a prototype water filtration system is to be built out of remaining intact supplies from the plane and passengers. On a deserted island there exists large amounts of seawater and spring water. Consequently in this situation, the issue of water quality arises. The spring water will be manipulated because it is without salt, making it easier to filter. The main goal of this project is to be able to reconstruct available materials into both filtration substances and a useful container that holds these filtration substances. There are many large scale ways to deal with the issue; they include desalinization and reverse osmosis. The prototype system will test these theories and multiple filtration substances, and as a result the best design and materials will create the most practical device, providing access to safe water.
